Preventing Ransomware Attacks

Prevention is far better than recovery. Most ransomware attacks succeed because of preventable mistakes. These practices dramatically reduce your risk.

Keep Everything Updated

Software updates frequently patch security vulnerabilities that ransomware exploits. Enable automatic updates for your operating system, web browser, and all applications. Pay particular attention to updates marked as security patches — these fix known vulnerabilities that attackers are actively exploiting.

Don’t use an administrator account for daily tasks. If ransomware runs with administrator privileges, it can do far more damage and spread more easily. Use a standard user account for everyday work and only switch to an administrator account when you need to install software or change system settings.

On a home network, consider segmenting your devices. If possible, keep important computers separate from devices like smart TVs and IoT gadgets, which may have weaker security and could serve as entry points.

Before considering paying the ransom, check if a free decryption tool exists for your ransomware variant. The No More Ransom project (nomoreransom.org) maintains a collection of decryption tools for many ransomware families. Security companies also release decryptors when they crack specific variants.

Report the Attack

File a report with your local law enforcement and the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at ic3.gov. In many countries, there are dedicated cybercrime reporting channels. Reporting helps law enforcement track and eventually prosecute ransomware operators.

Should You Pay the Ransom?

Law enforcement and security experts almost universally advise against paying the ransom. Paying funds criminal organizations and encourages more attacks. There’s no guarantee you’ll receive a working decryption key — some attackers take the money and disappear. Even if you do receive a key, the attackers may have also stolen your data and could demand additional payment.
